Time away from the classroom can be helpful for a number of reasons.  For the student who is having difficulties with behaving properly and learning is not possible, time away is designed to help them reflect on what isn't working and work on a plan for their return (with adult support).  It may also be used to replace misbehaviour with acceptable behaviour.  The child who cannot complete work in the classroom can do it in a quiet setting.  For the other students in the classroom, it is a break from interruption and an opportunity to continue on with their learning.  For the teacher, it allows for teaching and learning to be the main focus.  Time Away is rarely a time of isolation (as is the tradition with Time Outs).   It is used as an opportunity for an adult to come along side a struggling student and offer support in the form of teachable moments, replacement behaviours, exposure to natural consequences, etc.
